From Inspiration....To Finished Piece
The Workshops of David T. Smith’s Historic Furniture Design Studio affords you the luxury of participating in the design of your custom furniture. One of the many options is to transform your favorite picture or drawing into a piece of beautiful and functional furniture.
 For example, one of our customers wanted an entertainment center to look like a Pennsylvania Bucket Bench, but with the ability to house a large television. The example that they liked had sold at a New York Auction House for $114,000 in 1988. They liked the basic design, but wanted a more neutral finish.
These folks had a period Pennsylvania stone farmhouse with an extensive Redware collection. The plan was to build a piece that looked like it was an antique, display part of their Redware collection, and hide their flat screen plasma high definition TV so it would blend with the interior of their home.
 From the auction photo, we started with a rough hand sketch. We changed the doors to bi-fold so they would fold out of the way. Next, a scaled drawing was completed on the computer, finalizing dimensions and custom details.
 With the computer drawing in hand, wood, finish, and hardware choices were made.
Then, production began. When the piece was finished, it fulfilled the customer's need for a functional piece that captured the look and feel of an antique.
 
Through our website, we have offered you the largest collection of period reproduction furniture that is available. We hope that you find a piece on this site that is exactly what you want. However, if you find a piece that is not quite right; maybe it needs to be a little longer, shorter, have 8 drawers instead of 6, needs a different molding or base; rest assured that we can take that piece and adapt it to suit your individual needs. We have CAD designers on staff that can put your ideas on paper, and we have 1000’s of photos in our Antique archives that we can use to inspire a furniture piece just for you.
