Handmade Kitchens from The Workshops of David T. Smith
Country French
This house, built in the spring of 2006, was the featured home
in Dayton, Ohio’s Homearama. We based our kitchen design on traditional
antique Country French and French Canadian furniture pieces that
would have been built in the 18th century. The combination of painted finishes
with our “Time Worn” poplar wood finish provides a warm feel and appearance.
The cabinets have raised panel doors, ogee curved and straight crown
moldings, and Chippendale bracket bases. We utilized hand carved elements
on several of the pieces to employ the French method of attached carving as
decoration. The stove cabinet and the glass cabinets have random width beadboard backs.
As you view the photos, you will notice a slight difference in the colors
of the painted cabinets within the kitchen. All selections from our designer grade finish, the Linen White, Pewter Tankard,
Moss Green, and Putty offer similarly muted tones. The subtle difference adds much more interest to the kitchen than one light color throughout.
The brown “Time Worn” finish on the larger stove cabinet complements the lighter painted finishes and anchors the room. The hardware is our aged 18th
century style brass knobs.
The stove and refrigerator are Viking products. The enclosed hood is Vent-A-Hood, and the dishwasher drawers hidden behind faux drawer fronts on either side of the copper apron sink are Fisher Paykel.
The counter tops are manmade quartz, which is very durable and provides the appearance of granite for less cost.
The laundry room and all bathrooms in the house were also designed, built, and installed by The Workshops.
