  • Windsor Chairs

The Windsor style chair is perhaps the most popular chair for those interested in early American furniture. Our collection of museum-quality reproduction chairs is designed using mid 18th century examples and are hand built using wedged through tenon construction - using maple, hickory, oak, and poplar woods where appropriate to the construction of the chair.

We are so pleased to offer handmade chairs from the Crouse family that has been producing quality American made products since 1972. They hand craft the chairs as they would have been made two hundred years ago. All joints are wedged or pinned, the bottoms are jack-planed and some have scrolls and knuckles. They are beautiful in form & proportion and very comfortable!

We purchase all chairs in their natural state so that we may apply our own specialty finishes. Just like in the old days, we recommend and offer painted finishes due to the mixed use of woods.

Our general estimation for a chair order from initial order to completion is 10-12 weeks. This can vary depending on our production schedule, and our chairmaker's schedule, but we always do our best to get your order out as soon as possible. If you plan on purchasing a set of chairs it is best to purchase them all at the same time to ensure consistency in finish and aging. Made to Order Windsor chairs - arms, sides, and stools - are sold in a minimum of two. However, we may occasionally have singles available in our Buy from Stock Furniture Seating section.

*Our Windsor chair craftsman of over 30 years retired in 2020 and we wish him the best in his retirement! If you are attempting to match chairs purchased from us prior to 2020, our new line pairs well but do not match exactly in design.

Museum Painted Finish

Our Museum Finish is recommended for the look of an authentic Windsor chair with "Paint History."

“Paint History” is created by building up several layers of paint, finish, age, distress, and texture, to form a patina with depth and color variations that appears to have endured 200 years of use.

Antique Crackle Painted Finish

We consider this our best choice for the customer that wants a “newer looking” or more modern aged finish on their Windsor Chairs. This finish has moderate age and distress.

The paint has a crackled appearance reminiscent of an old alligatored finish that has dried and cracked over the years.

Grain Painted Seats

We offer several styles of graining. Graining, traditionally a darker color over a lighter base color, can greatly enhance the appearance of your chairs. Our fanciful folk art wood grain style is a favorite with our antique collecting customers.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

If you are not ready to order, need additional details, or have questions, please email us at [email protected].

Can I order just one chair?

If you are in need of one chair, please start shopping in our Buy from Stock Furniture Seating category. Occasionally, we do offer single chairs when we have them in stock, but due to the time and costs involved in the hand made chairs, we only take orders in a minimum of 2 chairs.

Do I have to select from the finishes shown above, or can I choose a different color?

The finishes and color samples shown above are the most popular choices among our chair customers.

Unfortunately, we only offer our Antique Crackle Painted finish in the four options shown above (Black, Black/Red, Blackgreen, Blackgreen/Red).

Our Museum Painted Finish is offered in eight standard colors that may also be used on your chairs. Click here to view other Museum Pained Samples.

**Custom Museum colors may be requested at an additional charge**

**Other Finishes, such as our Original Painted or Repaint, may be requested at an additional charge**

If you require a finish that is not shown in our available options, please contact us to determine availability. Custom colors and requests to "match" as close as possible to a different or old finish will incur upcharges due to the additional time required.

Will my new chair match the chair I bought from you 20 years ago?

Your new chair will not match your chairs from 20 years ago perfectly.

Our old style and our new style are very similar to each other in style, proportions, and high level of comfort however, they were created by different artisans so they will have their own unique traits. Both styles mix well together and complement each other nicely.

Our finishes have changed over our 40 years of business and a perfect paint match is not possible. If you wish to have us match as close as possible, you can select a custom finish option with upcharge and we will do our best to make sure your new chair finish works well with your old chair finish.

How much will it cost to ship my chairs?

The cost of shipping depends on many factors but you can be sure that we will do our best to get you the best rate possible. We work with a small selection of blanket wrap shippers that will handle your furniture with care. As the cost of shipping continues to rise, we are continually researching and locating quality shipping options for our customers. If you are unsure and need shipping estimates prior to your purchase, please feel free to contact us for further information.

Why does it take so long to get chairs?

Chairs that are made by hand take time to produce. They are made to order and not in stock. We work with a small family owned business that is located in another state. Due to the long distance involved, we only pick up chairs when a substantial order is completed and ready for us. Otherwise, the cost to our customers for this travel or shipment would be exorbitant.

Shipping time frame is not included in our estimated completion date. Shipper's schedules are out of our control and change constantly. We do not start setting up shipping until your chairs are close to completion. For the most part, shipping can be set up and completed within one month. If you are in an extremely rural or out of the way area, the shipping time frame could be longer. Please know that we always do our best to get the best shipper at the best rate for you. You will have this furniture forever and it is always worth the wait.
